Why is Cleaning Mold Important?
Mold can cause health problems for people who are allergic to it, including skin irritation and respiratory problems. Mold has been connected to coughing, throat irritation, sinus congestion, and more. Exposure for a long time can also irritate your eyes, skin, throat, and nose.
There is also an increasing theory that mold may be connected to the development of asthma. In extreme cases, you can also find mold connected to fungal infections and mold hypersensitivity or allergies. That’s why it is so important that mold needs to be cleaned up right away the very moment you find it.
Mold Cleanup Ideas
Always remember that when small amounts are involved, the do-it-yourselfer can do a good of removing mold from non-porous items such as metal, tile, or glass, using a borax cleaning solution.
However, if mold is spread in larger areas over 10 sq. feet, you might need professional help from Five Star Restoration to get rid of mold on walls, wood, carpeting, drywall, or insulation.
Mold may grow in places that are difficult to reach or have affected household materials that cannot be easily cleaned or replaced.
The big challenge of DIY mold cleanup is not knowing if you’ve completely eradicated the mold on your own.
Using professional mold removal services is the best way to get rid of mold for good and save you plenty of time. The remediation process will be quick and efficient and the living environment in your home will be fresh again.
If there’s a small amount of mold involved, there are many different steps you can take to clean the mold. Always consult a professional before taking steps to clean mold by yourself. First, to ensure appropriate safety and efficient results when cleaning mold make sure you:
Work in a well-ventilated area
Wear protective gear – rubber gloves, protective glasses, long sleeves and pants, and a dust mask
Keep children and pets away from the mold affected area
If you have experienced extensive water damage to your home don’t try to DIY. The mold on the walls will most likely be a toxic black mold
1. Using Bleach
You may already have some of the chemicals and cleaners handy required to kill and mitigate mold. Bleach, for example, is one of the most common chemicals used to clean mold from a home.
However, bleach cannot penetrate porous surfaces and is therefore not effective for the removal of mold on wood, drywall, and other porous surfaces.
2. Using Borax
Another cleaner for mold is borax. This chemical can be used in the same ratio as bleach. Use a scrub brush to work borax into the mold, and wipe away any moisture and leftover mold before you are done. Once again, you can leave the Borax solution in place unless children, pets, or food will be near the area.
3. Using Vinegar
Standard white vinegar can be very effective for killing mold. Without watering it down, pour some vinegar into a spray bottle. Spray the vinegar directly onto the mold and let it sit for roughly an hour.
Wipe the area with a wet cloth and allow the surface to dry. You can repeat this process a few days in a row for maximum efficiency.
4. Using Ammonia
Ammonia is another effective chemical for removing mold. It will kill mold on non-porous surfaces but is also ineffective on wood and drywall. However, ammonia is a harsh chemical and should be used only with extreme caution.
Three Most Important Mold Cleanup Safety Precautions
It's important to follow the recommended safety procedures while completing mold cleanup work.
See these basic precautions everyone working in moldy areas should follow.
Avoid breathing in mold or mold spores. Undisturbed, mold isn't likely to be airborne. But during the cleanup, spores will float on air currents and can enter the lungs unless precautions are taken.
1. A disposable respirator, either with a valve, or without, will provide suitable protection for light cleanup.
2. You also need to wear fairly long gloves. Ordinary household rubber gloves are fine if you are using mild detergents.
3. Goggles or protective eyewear is also required. The EPA recommends goggles that do not have ventilation holes. Mold wants a wet, warm area to grow, and the mucus membrane of the eye is an ideal incubator. Mold spores in the eye can cause serious health problems.
