The alarming rate at which COVID-19 has spread across the U.S. and other countries has many Americans grabbing whatever CDC-approved cleaning products they can find.  In supermarkets and neighborhood convenience stores as well as big box stores, cleaning products like bleach and disinfectant sprays are selling like hotcakes, and sometimes not available.

Before we delve into the specific cleaning products recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), let’s first discuss why disinfecting our homes is important, to begin with. What do we know about COVID-19’s modes of transmission so far?

Modes of transmission

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted two ways: from person to person through respiratory droplets and surfaces that have been touched by and used on an infected person, although perhaps not as much through surfaces as we originally thought.  The information is confusing on this one.

However, there was an experiment done by NHK, Japan’s national broadcasting arm, which showed that people may be infected by microdroplets specifically in closed environments like offices. This third means of transmission is called airborne transmission and is something that experts have been looking closely at as a rapid way of transmitting COVID-19.

Benefits of disinfection

Experts are unified in saying that disinfecting surfaces in offices, public spaces, and homes is an effective way of helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This proactive solution is not a one-time affair but must be done regularly and properly to be truly effective.

As a form of enveloped virus, COVID-19 can be easily destroyed by cleaning agents like soap, hand sanitizers, and disinfectants (bleach, sprays, and the like).  Among all these, disinfectants are the recommended cleaning agents as they offer the best deterrence against COVID-19.

The United States CDC recommends constant disinfection of high-contact surfaces such as elevator buttons, railings, tables, doorknobs, remote controls, and switches. In homes, this is an important measure that families should follow, especially when a family member periodically goes out of the home to purchase food and medicine or do personal business.

It's important to know what the experts are using

The US CDC has released a list of cleaning products that they believe offer the best protection against the spread of COVID-19.  These CDC-approved cleaning products are relatively easy to find as they can be bought practically from every supermarket or convenience store with household supplies.

These are the different cleaning products approved by the US CDC:

Bleach. Diluted household bleach (ratio: 5 tablespoons of bleach for 1 gallon of water) is a highly recommended sanitizing solution for both hard and soft surfaces. They can be applied using a clean cloth, paper towel, or sprays.

Alcohol. Alcohol, whether ethyl or isopropyl, is yet another disinfectant supply that CDC recommends for use in households. The US CDC encourages people to use alcohol with at least 70 percent solution for best results.

Disinfectant spray. Disinfectant sprays are convenient to use, have deodorizing property, and can also be very effective in disinfecting couches, bed sheets, and other soft surfaces inside homes.

Disinfecting wipes. Like baby wipes, disinfecting wipes can also be conveniently used to combat viruses on a lot of surfaces such as kitchen countertops, doorknobs, and railings. You can also have one in your car so you can wipe your door handles and steering wheel when you go outside.

Multi-surface cleaner and bleach. There are versatile products like Clorox Multi-surface Cleaner and Bleach that can be used on various surface types with great results. Not only do they get rid of up to 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria, but they also deodorize and clean stainless steel, stone countertops, and other surfaces.
